KNOWSLEY
Network Installation Solutions Ltd was the chosen installer to design and implement a fibre backbone for the Knowsley headend site.
The Requirements: Fibre Ring Topology
The requirements of the project were to have full connectivity between six data nodes taking into account if one or more nodes were to fail, the other nodes could still “talk to each other”. In order to achieve this, it was necessary to install a range of multimode, OM3, Laserwave 300/500 and single mode fibre.
The Proposal
Network Installation Solutions Ltd was required to install and commission a range of composite fibres incorporating single mode and various specifications of multimode. Working alongside Cable Design Technologies (CDT), NIS Ltd produced a fibre solution incorporating the latest technology in fibre design, manufacture and performance (view example specification).
NIS Ltd designed a star topology system based on main and diverse routings of the fibre.
Implementation
In order to minimise disruption to the client and for ease of access to all locations, NIS Ltd undertook the installation outside normal working hours. The fibre was delivered on separate drums enabling main and diverse cables to be pulled simultaneously.
Fibre Highway Containment
NIS Ltd were contracted to install basket tray within data buildings on site for specific use of the bespoke fibre ring, and traywork installed for main/diverse/redundant routes. Main/diverse/redundant fibre backbone was put in place to give full connectivity in the event of major breakdowns or loss of communication.
NIS Ltd designed and installed a complex grid of basket containment (lidded) to act for both fibre containment and inter-rack patching.
Testing
Testing of the completed install was accomplished by implementing two methods:

ODF Schematics
The Optical Distribution Frames (ODFs) installed by NIS Ltd are the key to a successfully managed transmission.
Principal Features
Principal features of any optical distribution frame should include flexible cabling access, expandable frame concept, integrated cable management and a future proof modular design. The approach NIS Ltd adopted began with a completely enclosed cabinet featuring an open architecture, within which the ODF fibres are routed and protected through proprietary vertical spool management units working in conjunction with individual patchcord units that control fibres as they exit from the heart of the system, the Splice 2000 cassette.
Specialised Service
NIS Ltd Specialises in developing and designing bespoke solutions to individual requirements, offered by our in-house technical/CAD development team. A fast turnover service including design and installation is available if required.
EDGE PROJECT
The Edge Project was undertaken by Network Installation Solutions Ltd over a period of 12 months and involved a major logistical exercise involving 6 teams of engineers plus backup office staff, carrying out major Cat5E and fibre installations at 14 Headend and 50 hub sites across the UK, from Plymouth in the South-west to Perth in Scotland.
In total 56 APW cabinets and over 150 kilometres of Krone Cat5e shielded cable were installed together with 675 Krone 24 way patch panels and 132 Krone 48 way patch panels, over 13,500 patch leads and over 800 metres of 9/125 and 50/125 fibre optic cable plus 1287 fibre optic patch leads.
Much of the preparatory work was undertaken at our head office and then transported to site.
Very strict timetables meant that there was little room for error and the job was completed within schedule and on budget.
